Venice’s lagoon islands

There are a great many islands in the Venetian lagoon, some of which are more well-known than others. Murano, famous for its glassmaking, is probably the most popular Venetian island among visitors.

Many of these islands remain uninhabited or lie abandoned, but some are home to hotels ranging from budget friendly to ultra luxurious, including the Kempinski San Clemente Palace located on the private island of San Clemente, and the JW Marriott hotel on Isola delle Rose.

But whilst no place in Venice is completely devoid of tourists or ‘undiscovered’, there are islands dotted around the lagoon which are at least, very nearly tourist-free and offer a glimpse into a side of Venice most visitors rarely take the time to find.

Escape the madding crowd

The local vaporetto are the best way to explore this chain of unspoilt islands which are well worth visiting if you’re in Venice for more than a day or two. Or better still, make an excellent alternative to staying amongst the other millions of tourists which visit Venice each year.
We divided our time between staying on the islands of Mazzorbo and Certosa, taking boat trips back to Venice’s historic centre and other islands in the lagoon from here.

This was the second time Rupert and I had visited Venice – the first was for his 16th birthday when we stayed in a little hotel just off San Marco. This time I was hoping to escape being jostled at every turn in Venice’s lanes and explore this most beautiful of cities at a more sedate pace away from the hordes.

A unique destination which should be seen at some point in your life if at all possible, Venice is notoriously overcrowded. It can also prove to be extremely expensive. To help minimize these factors, we chose to visit in March which is far enough out of the main tourist season to be easier on the budget along with fewer crowds, but not so far out as to greatly increase the chance of bad weather.

Although March and April can still be pretty cold, the weather was great during our stay. There is a higher chance of flooding during the winter, but having said this, when we last visited in May a few years earlier, St. Mark’s Square was flooded and we had to use elevated walkways to get around, so you can’t really tell.
