Tanzania is one of the most affordable safari and beach destinations in Africa; its magical offshore islands ideal for a post-safari retreat, from off the beaten track Pemba, located just north of Zanzibar, to the sleepy Mafia archipelago further south.
For ocean lovers, swim with whale sharks, turtles or dolphins off the stunning islands that comprise the Bazaruto Archipelago in southern Mozambique. Or be one of the few intrepid adventurers to travel to the little-known islands of São Tomé and Príncipe.
And don’t forget to explore some of Africa’s stunning freshwater islands where the wildlife is superb, and some of the finest safaris can be arranged from the lodges. Choose from one of Botswana’s many islands surrounded by crystal clear lagoons covered with floating water lilies, or a private island on the Zambezi River!
