The Kereru
Maori legend tells how the demigod Maui changed into a kereru (wood pigeon), so that he could visit the underworld to look for his parents. He carried with him the apron and belt of his mother. It is said that the white breast of the kereru represents her apron, while the dark plumage around its neck is her belt.
